Cart Not Hitting? 9 Ways to Fix a 510 Cartridge That Won't Work

Quick answer: When a cart won't hit, it's almost always one of three things: a clog (most common), a bad connection between cart and battery, or a battery issue. Work through the fixes below in order — they're sequenced from most to least likely.

1. Check the battery first

Press the button (or draw, on auto-draw batteries) with the cart removed — most batteries flash their LED when firing. No light? Charge it for 30 minutes with a known-good cable like a USB-C cord. If it still won't light after charging, the cell has likely died.

2. Loosen the cart a quarter turn

Over-tightening is the most common connection killer: it presses the cart's center pin down until it can't touch the battery contact. Unscrew slightly and test. On enclosed batteries like the Spacebox or SlickBox V2, make sure the cart is seated straight in the chamber.

3. Clean both contacts

Oil residue on the 510 threads acts as an insulator. Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol, wipe the battery's contact plate and the cart's bottom pin, let both dry 60 seconds, and reconnect.

4. Clear a clogged mouthpiece

Take a few gentle dry pulls (drawing without firing) to loosen congealed oil. If that fails, run a toothpick or unbent paperclip gently through the mouthpiece — you'll often feel the plug break free.

5. Use preheat mode

Thick oil clogs coils in cold weather. A 10–15 second preheat cycle melts the blockage evenly. If your battery has no preheat, take several short 1-second puffs instead. (Every current Myster battery — SlickStick Slim, Spacebox, SplitBox, PYPE PRO — includes preheat.)

6. Warm the cart gently

Roll the cart between your palms for a minute, or seal it in a zip bag and hold it under warm (not hot) tap water for 30 seconds, then dry completely. Never use a hair dryer, stove, or microwave — heat degrades oil and can crack the glass.

7. Check the airflow holes

Look at the small intake holes at the base of the cart. If oil has flooded them, store the cart upright overnight and dab the holes clear with a twisted paper towel corner.

8. Raise the voltage one step

If you're getting weak, thin hits rather than nothing, your voltage may simply be too low for that oil's thickness. Step up 0.2–0.3V and retest. See our full voltage guide.

9. Test with another cart or battery

The definitive diagnostic: if a different cart hits on your battery, the cart is the problem (a burned coil or factory defect — ask the dispensary about replacement). If no cart works, it's the battery. If your battery is more than a year old and charging slowly, the cell is at end of life — see our 510 battery buyer's guide for a replacement.

FAQ

Why does my battery blink 3 times when I try to hit it?

Three blinks almost always means a short or poor connection: the battery detects the wrong resistance from the cart. Loosen the cart, clean the contacts, and try again.

Why is my cart full but not hitting?

A full cart that won't hit is nearly always clogged (fix #4-#6) or has a flooded coil. Store carts upright to prevent both.

Can I unclog a cart without a battery?

Yes — warm it in your palms and take dry pulls, or clear the mouthpiece with a toothpick. Heat plus airflow does the rest once you reconnect.

Why does my cart hit but produce no vapor?

Either the coil is burned out, the oil is below the intake level (tilt the cart to redistribute), or the voltage is too low for the oil viscosity.
